NARRATIVE & THEMES FEATURES and DESIGN
Slugs are the first stage of one of the two evolutionary paths of the alien infection that overrun the facility.
They were human beings, staff members that used to work at the facility, which became infected by the virus and who’s genetic makeup had been spliced with the makeup of the original infection.
At this stage, most of the human physiology still remains but, as the genetic alternation rapidly takes over the organism, offshoots and growths of the new makeup begin to eat away, replace or expand the flesh and body parts.
One strain, the Shambler strain, mutates the host in accordance to the viral make up of the infection, engineered by humans.
The Slug strain instead does not carry the infectious traits of the viral strain, retains less of the engineered material and it instead carries an abbundance of the genetic makeup of the original organism.
The Slug strain transforms the human host into a digestive entity which absorbs biological matter in a process of preparation for a metamorphosis.
While Shamblers are propagators of the infection and their transformation is more closely relate to the engineered virus, Slugs instead are on a process of transformation to manifest the new form of the original organism.
GAMEPLAY FEATURES and DESIGN
DESIGN INTENT
Slugs have been designed with the intent of delivering a threat for the player with the purpose of sabotaging the environment and attacking the player’s ability to move and use distance to deal with threats.
Slugs are the primary range enemy of Project Eden’s threats roster.
AI BEHAVIOUR
Slugs are completely consumed by the compulsion to feed, absorb and increase their body mass.
They are extremely aggressive and wander aimlessly the facility.
Slugs wander the environment through 10 metres straight lines-trajectories.
As soon as it notices the player it will lock in place and begin to attack the player from afar. If the slug loses sight of the player, it will return to its wandering.
Slugs have excellent sight but poor hearing.
AI ABILITIES
Slugs are perpetually oozing digestive sap that drools and splashes all around them. This sap is highly corrosive and eats through even the toughest material, amking quick work of soft tissues.
As a Slug walks, it leaves a trail of corrosive acid on the ground.
Slugs are bloat with digestive sap and they spit it against potential prey to digest the flesh and prepare it for absorption.
If a prey happens to be close enough, a slug will instead vomit a river of sap rapidly consuming the victim.
Slime Trail:
With each step the Slug takes it leaves behind a “Drip” of corrosive slime.
Each “Drip” lasts for 35 seconds before dissolving, and it’s 1x1 metre in dimension.
When and if the player walks on the “Drip” , the player takes 7.5% damage for each 1 seconds it remains in contact with the “Drip”. Only the player takes damage from the “Drip”.
Corrosive Spit:
The Slug attacks by spitting a projectile at the player.
If the projectile hits the player it will deal 20% of its health over 3 seconds.
If the projectile misses the player or hits the player, it will create a “Drip” surface of 1x1 metres on the surface where it lands.
If the player is hit by the projectile it will be slowed down by 30% for 2 seconds.
Acid Vomit:
If the player is in close proximity, the Slug makes an area attack 2 metres long and 1 metre wide, three times in succession.
If the Vomit hits the player the player it will deal 20% health over 3 seconds, for each vomit spray.
If the vomit misses the player or hits the player, it will create a “Drip” surface of 2x1 metres on the surface where it lands.
Acid Explosion:
When the Slug dies it explodes creating a pool of corrosive slime, “Drip”, 3x3 metres.
Acid Juices:
When the slug receives damage it will create a Drip 1x1 in a random location around the Slug location where it was standing when it received damage.
